PASS/FAIL ACTIONS
◀
When we last left our heroes... You had escaped the bounty hunters and are now hiding out on a nearby planet. You are currently laying low at a backwater cantina. After speaking with the bartender, he said he knew someone that could help you both with acquiring disguises and new identification.
Great! Now we just have to keep our eyes down and hope we aren’t noticed until we can get those. Let’s find an isolated booth in the corner.
▶
◀
Agreed, can we try and be sneaky subtle so that no one takes notice of us?
Yes, that sounds like a Stealth check to me. Both of you, take a look at your character sheets and find the Stealth skill.
▶
◀
Got it!
Got it!
▶
◀
Great! That number in hexagon represents the amount of dice you can roll. That number next to the skill represents the amount of bonus you recieve to your highest rolled die. So Ajax rolls 2d10 and keeps the highest value, then adds +3 to that roll. Missa rolls 1d10 and adds +1 to that roll.
Oh. I’m not very stealthy... I hope I don’t get us caught.
▶
◀
Don’t worry, not many people are paying attention to you. I’m going to set the difficulty for this Stealth check at untrained, which when I look at the difficulty chart, is only 1d6.
Challenge Ratings:
1d6 = Untrained
2d6 = Trained
3d6 = Expert
4d6 = Master
5d6 = Lgendary
◀
This is just a Pass.Fail test, meaning we only have one quick roll to see if you succeed. I rolled a 3 for the challenge rating, so that means each of your results will need to beat a 3 to succeed, in otherwords, you need a 4 or better.
So I get to roll 2d10 and take the highest die then add 3 to it. My minimum is 4, I can’t fail.
▶
◀
True, you can’t fail at the task, but your roll could put you at a disadvantage later if you’re highest roll is only a 1. But we’ll get to that later.
Okay, let’s hope I’m not that unlucky. Rolling the 2d10 for my Dexterity attribute now.

I got a 3 and a 6. So I take the 6 and add my Stealth skill rank to that, which is a +3. Giving me a grand total of 9. So I slip through the cantina like a shadow. I’m in the booth before anyone even knows I’m there.
▶
◀
Alright, I guess it’s my turn. I roll my 1d10 for my Dexterity attribute.
I rolled a 3, but I get a +1 for my Stealth skill rank which brings me to a 4. So I succeed too! Not quite as sneaky as Ajax, but at least I didn’t trip over my own feet!
Great, you both make it to the booth without anyone taking any special notice of you. And about fifteen minutes later, another man slips into the booth along side you.
▶
◀
The shady looking man leans back and glances at each of you in turn, then nods. “Alright, let’s make this quick. My friend mentioned you’re looking for a set of disguises and new ID’s, yeah? I might be able to help you there... if you can pay.”
I stare him down. “Yeah, we can pay, if you can produce.”
▶
◀
“You think I’d be here if I couldn’t?” He rolls his eyes. “You and your girl here need to...” He pauses for a moment and stares Missa. “You know what... you look familiar...” Then his eyes go wide and you can practically see the credit signs appear in his eyes as he recognizes Missa and realizes what her bounty is worth.
Oh crap! That’s not good... We need a distraction. Sounds like it’s time for a good old fashioned bar brawl. I stand up and yell at him. “Hey, keep your hands to yourself!” Then I clock him.
▶
◀
That sounds like an unarmed combat roll to me, unless you had another skill in mind?
Yeah, unarmed combat is fine, I'm just clocking him in the jaw to shut him up.
▶
◀
Okay, this guy's no fighter, but he has seen a bar brawl up close a time or two. I'm setting the challege to beat as untrained (1d6), but I'm giving him a +1 for having a little experience.
Challenge Ratings:
Challenge ratings that would be somewhere between two ranks (such as untrained and trained) can add a +1, +2, or +3 to represent a higher challenge without actually moving it to the next challenge rating.
◀
4+1, so the number to beat is 5.
▶
I got a 1 and a 5. So I take the 5 and add my Unarmed Combat skill rank of +1 to that for a final result of 6, which is exactly what I needed!
▶
◀
Alright, and like I said, this guy isn't much of a fighter. So I'm not even going to track combat for this, I'm making it a pass/fail check. You hit him and he drops like a sack of potatoes. Lights out. And just as expected, everyone looks over at you and the place immediately breaks out into a full out bar brawl.
It's at this moment that you're other two party members come strolling in from buying supplies. Vex, Finnick, you walk into the bar in the middle of a brawl.
I'm not going to make everyone roll through this scene, you're the heroes of the story, these are random bar flies, you're going to win if anyone attacks you. So if you're doing anything in particular just describe it.
I stand in front of Missa to both try and keep her safe and hopefully to keep anyone else from recognizing her. Anyone that comes near gets booted back out into other patrons to let them duke it out with each other.
▶
◀
"Eep!" I duck back into the booth hoping that I'm not seen and that I don't have to fight.
I walk in and see the chaos that happened in our absence and I let out a sigh. "And now ya see why we can't have nice things... We leave them alone for five minutes and then we miss out on all the fun."
I reach up and grab the two nearest brawlers by the back of their hair and slam their heads into each other to put out their lights.
▶
◀
I just watch Vex crush two skulls together and roll my eyes. "Well... I'm glad to see that they're LYING LOW LIKE WE PLANNED!!" I shout that last part loud enough for Ajax and Missa to hear.
"It's not like this was the plan!" I shout back defensively. "It went sideways, I had to improvise!" I say as I smash another bar brawler to the ground.
▶
◀
It doesn't take long for you all to finish off the bar brawl. Once it's over, everyone except for you four are lying on the ground amidst the remnants of spilled drinks, broken bottles, and shattered glasses. They're either all out cold or groaning and wishing that they were. That's when you realize that you don't see the bartender anywhere, he must have slipped away at some point in the chaos.
Crap... he got a good look at us too. Man, we just can't buy a break. I turn to the others. "Bartender buggered off... chances are he got a good enough look at us that we won't stay incognito for long. We've got to move."
▶
◀
"Fine, we're done anyway." I shrug. "let's get the supplies back to the ship and get off this heap. We'll find another way around the patrols."
Just as you turn to leave, Finnick, the door opens and you bounce off of the chest of a six and a half foot monster of a man that comes walking into the bar.
▶
◀
He looks around at the mess, then his lips twist into a displeased snarl. "What in the frell happened in here?!" He bellows.
Vex looks up at the man with an innocent expression. "They were like this when we got here."
▶
◀
One of the two men that Vex knocked out a few moments before groans and puts his hands on the ground as if he is going to try and get up.
Vex kicks him in the head to knock him back out. "Shaddup! Nobody asked ya!" Then she turns and looks back up to the giant of a man with that innocent expression again.
▶
◀
I may have let you roll to try and convince him, but after that little display, the man definitely doesn't look like he's buying it.
"Alright, that's it! You all are coming with me." He reaches down to grab Vex by the arm.
▶
◀
Vex grins. "Big mistake, gato."
This guy has no idea how close he is to pulling back a bloody stump. I'll behave for now though, this guy is probably just a bouncer doing his job. I don't want to do any permanent damage, just enough to talk him out of trying to put his hands on me ever again. Can I just slap his hand away before he grabs me?
Yep, but this guy is no pushover. Now we're entering real combat, we'll have to roll initiative to see who reacts first.
